Charles Lloyd, a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master (2015) and honorary doctorate recipient from Berklee College of Music, is widely regarded as playing at the height of his expressive powers. The depth of his sound reflects a lifetime in music, guided by a forward-looking approach he describes simply as “Go forward.” Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Lloyd was shaped by a rich musical heritage and early influences including Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. He emerged as a leading voice in modern jazz, from his work with Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley to his own groundbreaking quartet. His recordings and performances are noted for clarity, restraint, and emotional depth. As Peter Watrous of The New York Times wrote, he has created “a strange and beautiful distillation of the American experience, part abandoned and wild, part immensely controlled and sophisticated.”
