PORTSMOUTH, N.H.Oct. 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Jimmy’s Jazz & Blues Club Features 15x-GRAMMY® Award Nominated Jazz Pianist & Composer FRED HERSCH and his Acclaimed Trio on Saturday November 4 at 7 & 9:30 P.M. Fred Hersch is a pervasively influential creative force who has shaped jazz music’s course over more than four decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, and recording artist. Hersch has long set the standard for expressive interpretation and inventive creativity in a stunning variety of settings, whether through his exquisite solo performances, as the leader of one of jazz’s era-defining trios, or in eloquent dialogue with his deeply attuned duo partners. With more than 50 albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, Hersch consistently receives lavish critical praise and numerous international awards for each highly anticipated new release.

“A lasting legacy of performances, recordings, and compositions that represent the highest level of musical achievement—works unrivaled in their beauty, imagination, and complexity…a clarity and musical genius of the highest order.”

” A pianist, composer and conceptualist of rare imaginative power.”

“A pristine pianist with a poet’s soul – a pair of qualities that combine to especially dazzling effect.”

“An elegant force of musical invention.”

“One of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation.”

FRED HERSCH has regularly garnered jazz’s most prestigious awards, including 15 GRAMMY® Award Nominations, a 2016 Doris Duke Artist, a 3x-Jazz Journalists Association “Pianist of the Year” Award-Winner (2011, 2016, 2018), a 3x-Downbeat Critic’s Poll “Pianist of the Year” Award-Winner (2015, 2016, 2021), and the 2017 Prix Honorem de Jazz from L’Academie Charles Cros (France).

In 2014, Fred Hersch garnered his sixth GRAMMY® Award Nomination for his solo on “Duet” from Free Flying, a duo album with guitarist Julian Lage that received a rare 5-star rating from Downbeat Magazine. An exceptionally responsive and intuitive collaborator, Hersch has engaged in duo partnerships with a number of spirited artists, including Anat CohenBill FrisellEsperanza SpaldingJulian Lage and Miguel Zenon; as well as vocalists Kurt EllingKate McGarry and Renee Fleming.

As versatile and exploratory as his trio and duo excursions can be, nowhere is the boundless range and emotional diversity of Hersch’s artistry as evident as in his breathtaking solo performances. Jazz Times has hailed his unaccompanied playing as “a complete, self-sufficient, uniquely pure art form.” His 2017 Palmetto album Open Book was, as the title implies, his most revealing and intimate solo outing, and was Nominated for two (2) 2018 GRAMMY® Awards. “When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are currently two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else,” states All About Jazz.

The current FRED HERSCH TRIO, in which renowned pianist Fred Hersch is joined by bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson, kicked off its fifteenth year together in the summer of 2023. The Fred Hersch Trio was voted the #2 Jazz Group in the 2018 Downbeat Critics Poll and the #1 Jazz Group in the 2019 Downbeat Critics Poll, recognizing its unique ability to traverse a wide range of styles and approaches while maintaining profound depths of emotion and the exhilarating spark of invention.

The Fred Hersch Trio’s debut album release, Whirl (2010), met with wide critical acclaim. The trio’s follow up, Alive at the Vanguard (2012), received a 4 ½ star review in Downbeat Magazine, and 2014’s studio recording Floating was Nominated for two (2) 2014 GRAMMY® Awards (“Best Jazz Album” and “Best Improvised Solo”). A return to the Village Vanguard for 2016’s Sunday Night at the Vanguard netted another pair of GRAMMY® Award Nominations, again for “Best Jazz Album” and “Best Improvised Solo”.

Fred Hersch’s most recent acclaimed album is entitled ‘Breath by Breath’, released in 2022. Downbeat Magazine stated, “An amazingly satisfying listening experience…a high-level melding of jazz and classical elements…These compositions masterfully transform the two groups into one, and together they build a musical universe that’s different from anything else on the scene today.”
