Grammy Award-winning Nicholas Payton is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and social activist, known for his innovative approach to music that transcends genres. A New Orleans native, he honors the legacy of “postmodern New Orleans music” and Black American Music (BAM), a term he coined to encompass the full spectrum of Black-created music, from jazz to soul. A prodigy, Payton began playing trumpet at age four and had a professional career by age 10. With over 20 albums as a leader, he’s collaborated with icons like Cassandra Wilson, Common, and Dr. John. Payton’s works include The Black American Symphony and live performances of Sketches of Spain. A vocal advocate for cultural liberation, he strives to elevate consciousness through music, emphasizing life experiences and the energy of sound. His philosophy centers on inspiring critical thought and societal change through art.
