Happy 94th birthday to jazz saxophone legend Lou Donaldson, born in Badin, North Carolina, on this day in 1926. “His distinctive blues-drenched alto has been a bopping force in jazz for more than six decades,” says the National Endowment for the Arts, which named him an NEA Jazz Master in 2013, citing his early work with trumpeter Clifford Brown as “one of the first forays into hard bop.” Here he is with Art Blakey and friends in Hamburg. Some cool narration kicks off our featured clip of his signature tune “Blues Walk.”
