“The Jimi Hendrix Experience is over. The acid rock musician died today in a London hospital, apparently from an overdose of drugs.” That’s ABC news anchor Frank Reynolds on this day in 1970 reporting the tragic death of James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix. He began his meteoric rise to fame as a backup player with the Isley Brothers, Little Richard and others. That’s him on the left playing lefty in 1965 behind duo Buddy and Stacey on “Shotgun” and, five years later, performing “Machine Gun” live at the Fillmore East. OK, we can’t resist: Here’s “Wild Thing” and “Voodoo Child.”
